The concept of BigJokeBook.co.uk was dreamt up by Tom Freeman, Technical Director at 18a Productions (so he built this site). The idea was born 2 years ago, during the last Comic Relief. Unfortunately , it was too short notice to act on the idea then - so we registered the domain names (www. addresses) and waited…

Then, at the beginning of 2009, we sprung into action! Designing the site, telling the press, and asking our good friends at The Usual Studio (fab design agency, and so able to create us a great logo) and Wibfilm (very clever film production company) for their help in making it all happen! 

And then here we are!

We launched on the 12th February, 2009, with a big splash in Bristol’s Cabot Circus for a launch, where Wibfilm filmed our viral video, BigJokeBook TV.

And we’ve been collecting jokes for Comic Relief ever since!

It’s £1 to add a joke to the joke book - and you can display your name if you want and add a link to a website/blog. If you’re a company - or if you just want to - you can upload a logo with your joke, name and web link too, for £5. Plus in both instances, you can give more than £1 or £5 if you want - we won’t turn your donations away! 

We approve all jokes before they go live on the site - so please you try to add something smutty or improper - beware, you will lose your pound! (But it’s going to a good cause!)

We haven’t taken any funds for developing the site or buying any promotion material. And neither have our great supporters who’ve donated loads of great stuff, bless em. The only part of the £1s that doesn’t go to Comic Relief is what Paypal charges us for handling the secure payment. They take 3.4% and 20p. We looked at other options - but there weren’t any. Paypal kindly had a think, and JustGiving were lovely and helpful - but because we needed a payment system totally integrated with the site, and we didn’t want to spend the £1s on monthly subscription  charges or anything like that, Paypal had to be the way.
